Goldman-hodgkin-katz cochlear hair cell models - a foundation for nonlinear cochlear mechanics
نویسندگان
چکیده
This theoretical contribution highlights the need for a nonlinear electrophysical hair cell model, since hair cell behaviour is what underlies important hearing phenomena, especially nonlinear cochlear mechanics. It is shown that a new nonlinear Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz (GHK) model of a cell membrane can lead to a more natural analysis of cell behaviour. In particular, instead of having to assume values for reversal potentials and internal ionic concentrations, it then becomes possible to calculate them from the boundary conditions, such as potentials and external ionic concentrations, which are usually known a priori. The new model also naturally includes nonlinear resistances, reversal potentials and membrane capacitance. The values of these nonlinear elements naturally adjust according to the known and derived potentials and ion concentrations.

The mammalian cochlea is a highly complex structure which contains several cells, including sensory receptor or hair cells. The main function of the cochlear hair cells is to convert the mechanical vibrations of the sound into electrical signals, then these signals travel to the brain along the auditory nerve. Auditory hair cells in some amphibians, reptiles, fish, and birds can regenerate or r...

متن کاملEffects of CPZ on cochlear mechanics
While prestin-mediated outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility provides mechanical force for sound amplification in the mammalian cochlea, proper OHC stiffness is required to maintain normal electromotility and to transmit mechanical force to the basilar membrane (BM). To investigate the in vivo role of OHC stiffness in cochlear amplification, chlorpromazine (CPZ), an antipsychotic drug that alte...
متن کاملA model of cochlear mechanics with outer hair cell motility.
The outer hair cell (OHC) is known to have the ability to change its length in response to voltage changes across its membrane. The apparent function of this OHC motility is to enhance the tuning of the basilar membrane. The model presented in this paper represents the displacement-to-voltage and voltage-to-displacement transducers of the OHC explicitly, each as low-pass filter functions. The m...
متن کاملCochlear potential difference between endolymph fluid and the hair cell's interior: a retold interpretation based on the Goldman equation.
Reported cochlear potential values of near 150 mV are often attributed to endolymph itself, although membrane potentials result from ion fluxes across the adjacent semipermeable membranes due to concentration gradients. Since any two fluids separated by a semipermeable membrane develop potential due to differences in solute concentrations, a proposed interpretation here is that positive potenti...
